TGNC Advocates & Allies

This 4-module leadership and advocacy training is designed to engage participants around core legislation that impact the transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) community. The training is comprised of four 90-minute modules - each module consists of experiential learning, self-reflection, case studies, and a mini project. All activities are aimed at helping participants develop as advocates, allies, and activists who can take action around the most pressing issues in the community, and to acquire the knowledge and skills required for effective advocacy at the local and federal levels. 


Overall Objectives

  • Understand gender-based legislation and how it effects TGNC individuals
  • Increase knowledge on TGNC-specific issues at the individual, community, and institutional levels
  • Increase knowledge and skills required for effective advocacy in local, state, and national government
  • Develop an effective communications strategy aimed at furthering a timely and relevant TGNC-specific policy item

Training Modules at a Glance

Module 1

  • Identifying Core Gender-Based Legislation and Research Tools for Advocacy
    • Understand advocacy and the role it plays in improving the lives of TGNC people
    • Choose the most effective communications tactics and advocacy tools to further TGNC agenda
    • Gain an understanding of how the legislative process affects gender-based legislation at the local and federal levels

Module 3

  • Engaging Multiple Stakeholders
    • Analyze and strengthen alliances with a diverse set of stakeholders to implement, support, evaluate, and communicate TGNC-specific advocacy messages
    • Engage key stakeholders and audiences around Gender-Based Legislation in national, state, and local public policy that impact TGNC communities
    • Identify potential opponents and how to approach/engage them to further advocacy efforts

Module 2

  • Storytelling and (Social) Media: Tools for Effective Advocacy
    • Apply a wide range of advocacy strategies, including giving a speech, making a presentation, and writing a letter, to curate an advocacy message and build support around specific legislation that impacts the TGNC community 
    • Analyze the ways in which successful campaigns have used social media and storytelling to promote their messages
    • Identify opportunities for storytelling in TGNC-specific campaigns and begin crafting effective stories that have emotional impact

Module 4

  • Developing an Effective Advocacy Campaign Organize and build collaborative mobilization plans for Gender-Based Legislation
    • Practice delivering clear and concise advocacy messages that further TGNC-specific interests
    • Receive feedback from participants and integrate strategies to improve overall messaging
